West End Group was appointed as Principal Contractor to undertake critical plant room infrastructure upgrades at Wolfe House a live academic building within University of Southampton. The works involved:
- Converting the existing gravity-fed hot water system to a pressurised system, including full strip out of redundant cylinders, pipework and associated components.
- Scope included mechanical works such as the installation of new hot water storage cylinders, pressurised booster sets, BMS integration and thermal insulation.
- Electrical works comprised all associated containment, power supplies and controls integration to support new system.
The scheme was delivered in a confined loft space environment and required detailed logistical planning, risk mitigation (manual handling, confined space access and heat exhaustion) and compliance with UoS’s strict permit-to-work system. Site coordination, security and stakeholder liaison with University Estate teams were essential due to adjacent live teaching areas.
